Website Military Child Education Coalition
About the Role
The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is a fully remote national nonprofit (~$4.7M annual budget) serving military-connected children and families. We’re engaging an independent bookkeeping contractor for a defined 3–6 month engagement to handle day-to-day transaction processing and month-end close support while we build out our finance function. You’ll work inside MCEC’s systems under the oversight of our Manager of Operations, maintaining accurate financial records.
This is a great fit for an experienced nonprofit bookkeeper who wants focused, well-defined part-time work with a mission-driven organization. There may be potential to extend or transition into a longer-term arrangement depending on organizational needs.
What You’ll Do
Handle monthly transaction coding and reconciliation across all accounts
Process accounts payable and support vendor payments
Enter payroll journal entries from Deel (our PEO platform) into the accounting system
Manage month-end close: reconcile bank statements, prepare trial balance
Track grant and restricted funds in coordination with program staff
Produce a monthly financial reporting package (cash position, budget-to-actual, restricted/unrestricted fund summary) for review before it goes to leadership and the Finance Committee
Support annual audit prep: schedules, documentation, and auditor requests
Maintain chart of accounts integrity and flag coding issues for correction
What You’ll Need
3+ years of bookkeeping experience, preferably with a nonprofit
Experience with fund accounting principles (restricted/unrestricted revenue, grant tracking)
QuickBooks Desktop proficiency required
Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT experience strongly preferred (we’re mid-implementation)
Familiarity with nonprofit audit processes and supporting documentation
Comfort working independently in a fully remote environment, with reliable and responsive communication
CPA or bookkeeping certification a plus, not required
Systems You’ll Use
QuickBooks Desktop · Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT · Deel (payroll) · Google Workspace (Drive, Sheets, Gmail)
The Arrangement
This is a fully remote, part-time independent contractor role. You set your own schedule within agreed monthly deadlines (e.g., close by the 10th business day of the following month), with monthly check-ins with the Manager of Operations. You provide your own equipment; this role is not eligible for employee benefits.
